September 9 – Dr. Ramesh Laungani will talk about a $607,539 National Science Foundation grant awarded to Doane.
September 16 – Work project at the Maples. Details TBD.

September 30 – Club Assembly. We will break into committees then report back to the Club.

Drawing:
Jack Thompson won the drawing and designated both his share and the contribution portion for End Polio Now. The accumulated pot was $79 but Jack did not win it.
Picnic Table Project:
Small groups of Rotarians will proceed with the next steps: pour concrete pads, assemble tables, round the edges, sand and stain the exposed surfaces.
Grocery Grab:
The Fundraising Committee presented initial plans for the 5th Annual Grocery Grab then met following the regular meeting to finalize them. Here are details:
· Schedule: Start ticket sales early October. Drawing will be at our meeting on December 2. Grocery Grab will be Saturday, December 12.
· Where: Food Mart
· Tickets: As in the past, tickets will be $10 each or 3 for $25. At the meeting, we agreed that, since this is our main fundraising event for the year, each member will be responsible for two books of tickets (20 tickets). Members may sell or buy the tickets but are not eligible to win. If this expectation creates a hardship for a member, please contact John Lothrop.
· Selling: We will contact Peter Clarke at Food Mart about selling tickets in front of the store.
· Sponsorships: We will offer sponsorships for $250. Sponsors will receive 10 tickets plus recognition on our advertising and in newspaper articles. Advertising commitments will have to be made in September in order to be included in flyers and posters.
Program:
John reported on the District 5650 Conference.
Friday, August 21 was Foundation Day.
• The luncheon speaker was Dr. Mark Rupp, MD, Medical Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He spoke about
– New & emerging infectious diseases
– Ebola & disease containment center at UNMC
– Vaccination issues, including polio
• Foundation presentations included projects at both the local and global levels.
– Local
• Polio - progress in the fight plus talks by polio survivors
• 5th grade Career Fair sponsored by the Council Bluffs clubs
• Camp Kitaki music program and efforts by several clubs to build a stage and outdoor instruments
– Global
• Zabuli Education Center in Afghanistan (Omaha Suburban)
• Water wells in South Sudan (Wayne)
• Foundation awards were presented following dinner.
– Crete Rotary received the award for the highest per-capita giving to The Rotary Foundation.
– Crete Rotary received the award for the best community service project among small clubs for our recycling efforts at the Saline County Fair.
The theme for Saturday, August 22 was “Where Does the Journey Go from Here?”
· The morning sessions focused on youth programs and the influence and impact Rotary has on our next generation.
· The luncheon speaker was Nebraska native son and retired Astronaut Clayton Anderson who spoke about “Service Way Above Self.”
· Rotary talks in the afternoon included:
– Rotary moments: “When did you move from being a Rotary member to being a Rotarian?”
– Be a Gift to the World
– Visioning process for clubs
