Highlights from last week's meeting:

District Conference is coming up on March 31/April 1. This year it will be held at Innovation Campus in Lincoln. You can find all of the details and registration information on the district website. Our Golden Wheel award honoree, Russ Sears and his wife Jan will be attending as our guest. Please attend the Saturday evening program to show our club's support!

Our spring Hwy Cleanup service project is scheduled for Wednesday, April 19 with the day before and after that date held for weather related backup dates.

Please be thinking about District Grant project ideas for this coming year. If the club is going to participate in a grant project, we need to be identifying and discussing any project ideas this month so we can make application in April.

We still need a volunteer to be our president for the coming Rotary year. The new Rotary year starts on July 1st.

Our Program: Constru Casa

“In January two of our members, Jim Johnson and Karen Drevo, went to Guatemala to build a house for local residents Cesar, Miriam, and their young son Isaac.  They were only there a week but managed to work with some local masons to build a 14ft X 18ft house built of concrete block.  The house is one room and has one door and one window.  The kitchen is in a separate building nearby and was not constructed during their time there.   The house costs about $4400 US dollars. The family has to go through a vetting process with an interview, must apply for a loan of the equivalent of $500 US dollars, and repay it.  The rest is funded by generous donors like the Dudley family.  The organization they worked with is Constru Casa, and 13 people from the Crete area went on this trip.
Previously, they lived in a home built with sticks and clay and a dirt floor.  The new house they built is much improved being constructed of concrete block walls and a concrete floor.  The group worked Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday that week and duties included digging the trench for the rebar, bending the metal to make rebar, carrying bricks ¼ a mile up a narrow, steep path, carrying water ¼ a mile up the path to make the cement (mixed by hand), and pouring the foundation, among many other tasks.  Ultimately the house would have a tin roof that the top layer of bricks would need to be cut at a slant—also by hand by the masons.
On Friday, there was a dedication of the house.  The one Jim worked on was funded primarily by the Dudley family.  The house Karen worked on was provided by the Donis family.  The families were so thrilled to have a house of their own!  Several times during the presentation, Jim and Karen commented on how wonderful the Guatemalan people are, how grateful they are for people like Jim and Karen to help build the house, how hard working they are, and just happy.  Thank you, Jim and Karen, for exemplifying Rotary’s motto of Service Above Self.”

Our next meeting is on Wednesday, March 22nd at the VFW. Stan Croft will be our presenter. He administers the Crete Public Schools Alternative School. See you there!
