August 26 meeting:

We will stain wood pieces for the picnic tables using one of Craig Snyder's garages.  It is located near the new Runza restaurant, just behind (west) the car wash.  Wear work clothes and bring disposable gloves if you have them.  (Bret and John will bring some in case you don't have them.)  Also, we could use containers so that we can share the stain. Coffee cans, yogurt containers, etc. will work.  Brushes will be provided.

Following the staining, we will have a pot luck meal.  Pulled pork and bottled water will be provided.  Everyone else should bring a dish (sides, chips, desserts).  Table service will also be provided.

People will start staining at 4:00 pm.  Please join the group when you are able but make sure you are there in time for the pot luck meal!

September 2 meeting:

Picnic table work.  We will continue work on the tables.

Treasurer’s Report:

No report

Drawing

Mary Garrison won the drawing and designated a contribution for End Polio Now.  To the feigned disappointment of everyone else, she did not draw the Queen of Spades.

Program

Dr. Rod Diercks, Professor of Education at Doane, described the Nature Explore Outdoor Classroom.  The concept is to allow students and their families to experience nature first hand.  A growing concern among educators is that our children are spending less and less time in nature.  Studies show that more exposure to nature enhances a child’s development.

Following the meeting, Rod led a tour of the outdoor classroom which is located in the woods south of the Hansen Hall on the southeast corner of campus.

The Crete Rotary Club meets Wednesdays at 5:30 PM at Doane College in the Board Room of the Perry Campus Center.  Due to numerous service projects, we may not meet some weeks.  Please check the event calendar.
