Last week we heard from member Karen Drevo as she told us about her trips to "Burning Man" the last couple years. It's a temporary city in Nevada (about 2 hours north of Reno). About 70,000 people make the city and spend a week there. There are a few rules: Radical Inclusion, Gifting, Decommodification (no branding/selling), Radical Self-Reliance, Radical Self-Expression, Communal Effort, Civic Responsibility, Leave No Trace, Participation, Unplug. Karen met a bicycle group through her son, Will, a DJ/VJ at the event, and their group is called "bike gods" where they fix bicycles and teach bike maintenance (they're sponsored by a bike shop in Reno who provides the supplies). Bicycling is the main form of transportation during the city as it spans several miles. Burning man includes artwork/statues from various artists, a temple, and a huge wooden structure of a man. The temple has a tribute time on Saturday where Karen made a tribute to her mom, and on Sunday the temple and the wooden man are burned. On the last day, everyone there must clean everything (leaving no trace). Thank you, Karen, for sharing your fun adventure with us! Some upcoming events to keep in mind include: - February 2nd (this Monday) is National Crepe Day! Paul Larsen has invited us all to his Crepe Restaurant at 2700 "S" St from 4-8pm to enjoy some crepes and celebrate National Crepe Day!
- February 21st--Boy Scout Pancake Feed (details to come on when volunteer shifts will be)
- February 23rd from 6-8:30pm and February 26th from 5-8pm--Crete Elementary Book Fair
