July 8 – End of year picnic with passing of the gavel from Bret Schroder to John Lothrop. The picnic will be at Tom & Vicki Sorensen’s, 715 Co. Rd. 2100 starting at 5:30pm. Please bring a salad, side dish, or dessert.
July 16-19 – Volunteer opportunities for the Saline County Fair. See separate sign-up sheets.
July 22 – Follow-up Club Assembly. We will divide into committees, meet separately, and report back to the entire club.
July 29 – District Governor Rod Bates will meet with the club. PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND.
Treasurer’s Report:
Per outgoing treasurer Jim Fahrnbruch, the account balances as of June 29 were:
Checking Account: $1,698.91
Scholarship Fund: $3,272.64
Grant Fund: $89.50 (We need $2,000 for our matching grant.)
Club dues of $65/six months were due July 1. Our local dues include per-member amounts that we pay to both Rotary International and Rotary District 5650. Please pay your dues promptly.
Salt Dogs Baseball:
Several Lincoln area clubs are going together to sponsor attendance at the Lincoln Salt Dogs game on August 1 as a fundraiser for efforts to eradicate polio. For every $16 ticket sold, the Salt Dogs will contribute $8 to PolioPlus. The respective clubs will receive credit for those contributions.
Picnic Table Project:
Tom Parker will build one picnic table to better understand the work involved. Following that, we will determine a plan for cutting the parts and then assembling them. Bret Schroder will contact the City of Crete with regards to placing tables at Rotary Park.
Saline County Fair:
John will send a follow-up message with volunteer sign-up information.
Program:
We held a Club Assembly to discuss plans for the upcoming year. John started the discussion by distributing copies of the requirements for receiving the Presidential Citation for 2015-16. We will use the criteria for guidance of our club’s activities throughout the year.
John has submitted specific club goals for 2015-16. Some of those goals include:
• Foundation giving = $2,500 (every member gives, average of $100/member)
• Polio giving = $35/member (give or get)
• Establish an Interact club (start with 4 RYLA students)
• Make our club appealing to current & new members
We discussed several topics for the upcoming year.
- Meetings. We will continue to stress the importance of doing service projects. However, instead of taking off a meeting for every project, we will do so only if the projects include a significant number of Rotarians together at the same time and place, e.g., clean-up at the Youth Cabin, highway clean-up, etc. We will try to have at least three regular meetings per month. Some months will have more service projects and, for those months, we will meet no less than twice. Meetings will include all-club social events, e.g., the Christmas party.
- Rotary Topics. We will strive to include programs on specific Rotary topics. We can pull information and/or videos from the Rotary International website (www.rotary.org)
- Get to Know Members. It was suggested that we periodically have one member share information about him/herself. We don’t want to assume that every member knows every other member.
- Programs. We will resume the practice of having all club members share in planning programs. Every six months, we will assign small groups of members to be responsible for each month.
- Committees. We will re-institute committees in order to expand the impact of our club and to help members be actively engaged. Suggested committees and potential members include:
- Foundation – Share information about the Rotary Foundation and solicit financial support. (Mary G, Cody V?)
- Public Relations – Help compile information and publish the Boomerang; help publicize club activities. (Alec E, Judy H?)
- Membership – Focus on initiatives to retain current members and attract new members. (Cody V?)
- Program – One member will be the “Program Chair” and coordinate the planning of programs by the individual groups for each month.
- Service – Responsible for identifying and organizing service projects. (Tom S, Chris D)
- Fundraising – Coordinate our efforts including the Grocery Grab and any other activities needed to support scholarships, local grant projects, etc. (Chris D will help.)
- Youth Programs – Responsible for administering our scholarship program, recruiting students for RYLA, and starting a local Interact club. (Alec E, Judy H)
- Other?
At our July 22 meeting we will ask members to commit to serving on a committee. We will break into individual groups for discussion then re-convene the club for reports from the committees.
