Schedule:

See the Upcoming Events section on the left side of the Crete Rotary home page.  You may click on a specific event to get more details.

August 19 – Dr. Rod Diercks, Professor Education at Doane, will describe the Nature Explore Outdoor Classroom.  A field trip to the “classroom” on the south side of campus will be available following the meeting.

August 26 – Picnic table staining.  We will meet at the garage behind (west) the car wash by the new Runza restaurant.  A pot luck meal will follow.  Details TBD.

Foundation Report:

As of August 12:

  Annual Fund:  Goal $2,500,  Given $510,  20%
  Polio:  Goal $875,  Given $270,  31%

Picnic Table Project:

At the Youth Cabin, we will be placing 6 tables in two lines to replace existing tables, along with 2 long concrete pads.  We will ask the Boy Scouts to remove old tables.

At the Dog Park, we will be placing 2 tables, one under each shade arbor with a concrete pad for each.  We need confirmation from City Park & Recreation.

At Rotary Park, we will be placing our tables near the playground at north end of park in order to avoid congestion around concession stand and bleachers, and maximize their use for non-baseball activities near playground.  There will be a separate concrete pad for each table.

Tom P. is cutting pieces for 6 tables.  Our staining “party” for our August 26 meeting.  We will need to frame, prepare, and pour pads; assemble and place tables; and attach plaques to tables (see image below).

Jim Johnson noted that we have already disbursed scholarship funds for 2015-16 and we still have approximately $3,200 in our scholarship account.  He also noted that we typically net $5,000-$6,000 with our Grocery Grab.  The Club agreed to move $2,000 to the Grant account to meet our financial commitment for the matching District Grant with the intention of replacing the $2,000 through the 2015 Grocery Grab.  This will allow the Club to continue to focus on a single fundraising event.

Program:

John Lothrop reminded us that Rotary International President K. R. “Ravi” Ravindran was on the cover of the July, 2015 issue of The Rotarian magazine and featured in an article therein.  John then played a video recording of Ravi’s address to at the recent District Governors’ Elect conference in San Diego.

A few quick facts on the President:
  • From Colombo, Sri Lanka.
  • Family’s tea plantations nationalized in 1972
  • Started company to supply tea bag packing
  • Rotarian since 1974
