Notes from business meeting, April 29, 2015.

Attendance:
13 of 26 members attended.

Schedule:
We rearranged our schedule for upcoming meetings.  See the Upcoming Events section on the left side of this page.  You may click on a specific event to get more details.

Next week (May 6) we will tour the construction site of the new high school.  We will meet at 5:30PM behind the current high school by the green house.  To limit traffic in and out of the construction site, we will carpool to the new building.

Treasurer’s Report:
Jim Fahrnbruch reported the following balances:
Checking Account = $2,122.95
Scholarship Fund = $6,251.86
Grant Fund = $89.50
Total = $8,464.31

Jim reminded us that we will pay $3,000 in scholarships within the next couple of weeks.

Split-the-Pot Drawing:
Our guest speaker Adam Zobel won $7 in the drawing and donated the second $7 to polio eradication.  To the feigned disappointment of the attendees, Adam did not draw the Queen of Spades to win the accumulating pot.

Miniature Train:
Tom Parker stated that Harold Jones’s health is declining and he is no longer able to maintain and run the miniature train.  Harold has provided the train for numerous public events in Crete and throughout the area for 29 years.  He would really like to have it remain in Crete but needs someone or a group to purchase it and take responsibility for maintaining and running it.  There was general discussion and people were asked to think about options.

Matching Grant Discussion:
After discussion of several opportunities for a project to submit for District matching grant funding, we agreed that we will submit a proposal to build picnic tables and benches.  Rotary Park has no tables and the existing tables at the Scout Cabin need to be replaced.  Depending on costs, we would anticipate building 8-12 tables and placing them at the two sites.

Program:
Adam Zobel from Public Health Solutions gave a presentation on cancer prevention.  See accompanying article.

Adam Zobel of Public Health Solutions on Cancer Prevention

Adam Zobel of Public Health Solutions (PHS) gave a presentation on Cancer Prevention.  PHS is within the Department of Health and Human Services with offices in Crete and Beatrice.  Their mission is to prevent disease and injury, promote wellness, and protect the personal, community, and environmental health of all people in Fillmore, Gage, Jefferson, Saline, and Thayer counties in southeast Nebraska.

Saline County is one of the counties in Nebraska with the highest rates of cancer diagnosis.  Specifically, the county is in the group of counties with 482.4 – 817.5 cases of cancer diagnosed per 100,000 residents.

Adam noted the leading causes of death among various cancer types in the U.S. – breast, prostate, lung, and colon.

Significant risk factors include diet and life style.  In the U.S., we eat too much red meat (especially in Nebraska), too many fatty foods, and not enough fruits and vegetables.  In order to help prevent cancer, we need to eat more wisely and exercise more.  It is also important to monitor your health with a physician and do periodic testing.

The Crete Rotary Club meets Wednesdays at 5:30 PM at Doane College in the Board Room of the Perry Campus Center.  Due to numerous service projects, we may not meet some weeks.  Please check the event calendar.
