Last week, Crete Rotary hosted Crete Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Jack Cochnar, who talked about how the chamber works within the business community and upcoming events and engagement. Cochnar is a Dorchester native married to Suzy (Kersenbrock) and they have four children. Cochnar farmed before a 24-year career at several local farm equipment retailers. The Cochnars own Gold Star Martial Arts studio, where daughter Alyssa also helps manage locations in Crete and Seward.

Cochnar was a chamber board member and Great Pumpkin Festival steering committee member prior to being named chamber director in November. He jumped right in to the position by organizing the Christmas shop local campaign and the chamber's annual banquet. He said he enjoys the business and networking endeavors of the chamber as well as being a liaison for local businesses. Cochnar said there are a lot of new and exciting things happening in Crete that the chamber can promote and become involved.

Club members held a discussion regarding club scholarships and voted to increase the amount of each of four awards from $750 to $1,000 and distribute the funds on a semester basis. Several club members want to give consideration to all applicants, including those looking at earning a 2-year, or trade school degree in addition to previous emphasis given to four-year college-bound students. It was noted that one award is also based on an essay from one of the senior PALS: senior class members who mentor a fifth grader.

Reminders: The Grocery Grab date is April 18 at Crete Foodmart. We will draw the winning ticket on April 7. Please bring any updates on sponsorship requests to the Jan. 29 meeting  or by the end of this week.

Our meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 5:30 p.m., will have an update from the Blue River Arts Council.
