Members of the Crete Rotary Club volunteered for numerous activities at the Saline County Fair. These included serving at the Beer Garden, counting laps for the Figure 8 Car races, parking for the concert, lining up floats and groups for the parade. The biggest effort was recycling aluminum cans and plastic bottles.

For the thirteenth year, the Crete Rotary Club provided recycling for the major evening events at the fair. These included the Figure 8 Car Races on Thursday, the concert on Friday, and the rodeo on Saturday. The morning after each event, volunteers emptied recycling containers, dug through trash barrels, and climbed under bleachers to gather aluminum cans and plastic bottles. To make the task even more interesting(?), lids have to be removed from the bottles (so that they don't explode during processing) and remaining liquids are poured out of the cans and bottles.
As a result of the efforts of 18 volunteers over three days, we recycled 7 large bags of plastic bottles and 21 bags (173 pounds) of aluminum cans. A big THANK YOU to everyone who helped!
Picking up recycling on Saturday morning were (left to right) Jill McCartney, Geoff Easton, Bob Gunther, Tom Parker, Craig Snyder, and Jim Fahrnbruch.
At the County Fair since 2003, the Crete Rotary Club has diverted the following from landfills:
- 245 bags and 2,136 pounds of aluminum cans
- 105 bags of plastic bottles
