Crete Rotary Club hand-delivers dictionaries to area third graders
Recently, over 145 dictionaries were hand-delivered by the Crete Rotary Club to third graders at Crete Elementary, St. James Parochial, and Dorchester Elementary.

The dictionaries are part of Rotary's world-wide literacy initiative. The goal of the dictionary program is to assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary. Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn, which allows for this donation to have the greatest impact for area youth.

As the dictionaries were being delivered, students were encouraged to look up words like volunteerservice groupinternationalpolio eradication, litter cleanup, and literacy.  They also learned about the Rotary motto: service above self.  Inside the cover, students were able to write their names next to the Rotary 4-way-test:  1) Is it the truth?   2) Is it fair to all concerned? 3) Will it build good will and better friendships? 4) Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Rotary is 1.2 million neighbors, friends, and community leaders who come together to create positive, lasting change in communities around the world. For more information about Crete Rotary, visit creterotary.org.  This is one of many annual projects that the Crete Rotary Club does to improve our community and nation, along with thousands of other Rotary Clubs around the world.
Service projects - dictionaries, picnic tables, and haunted house
Attendance:
There was no business meeting this week.  Instead, we delivered dictionaries to third grade students at Crete Elementary School, placed three picnic tables in Rotary Park, and helped prepare Sokol Hall for the Haunted House.

Schedule:
See the Upcoming Events section on the left side of the Crete Rotary home page.  You may click on a specific event to get more details.

October 7 – Club Assembly.  We will break into committees then come back and report to the entire club.

October 14 – Highway cleanup.  Meet at 5:00PM at the Crete Area Medical Center.

October 21 – Regular meeting at Doane.  Max Kathol will talk about his trip to Turkey.

October 28 – (Tentative) Stain picnic table parts.  We will meet at Craig Snyder’s garage (west of the car wash, south of Runza) for another staining “party.”

Treasurer’s Report:
Checking:  $1,271.93
Scholarship:  $1,273.42
Grants:  $1,673.15

Drawing:
John L won the drawing and designated both his share and the contribution portion for PolioPlus.  He did not win the accumulated pot.

Picnic Table Project:
We have placed three completed picnic tables at Rotary Park.  The City Parks and Recreation Department will be responsible for providing chains and padlocks to secure the tables to the concrete pads.  We now have space in the garage to assemble the next three tables.

Craig Snyder graciously loaned us his bobcat and his driving skills to remove the posts from the old picnic tables at the Youth Cabin.  Craig also used the bobcat to smooth out the ground in preparation for pouring the concrete pads.  Thanks, Craig.

Grocery Grab:
We now have sponsorship commitments from True Value, Pinnacle Bank, Union Bank & Trust, and Bunge Milling.  We are waiting on one more potential sponsor before printing the tickets.

Dictionaries:
Dictionaries have been delivered to 3rd grade students at Crete Elementary School and at St. James School.  Dictionaries will be delivered to Dorchester soon.

The Crete Rotary Club meets Wednesdays at 5:30 PM at Doane College in the Board Room of the Perry Campus Center.  Due to numerous service projects, we may not meet some weeks.  Please check the event calendar.
