Rotary Foundation Grant: We decided to pursue a grant to build an arbor entrance to the Community Garden. The application is in to the District. We will update you as we hear from them.
Rotary Foundation Donations: We have been challenged to increase contributions to the Rotary Foundation. Each member’s comtribution to the Foundation (annual fund or polio) will be matched up to $1,000.00.
Contributions since May 17: $217.00 + Match ($217) = $434!!
Our contributions so far this year are:
Annual Fund $1727 (Goal = $2500) Polio $667 (Goal = $875).
Drawing: Lisa O’Brien (Speaker) won the draw of $6.00, but she didn’t find the Queen of spades. She donated $6 to the Annual Fund. Our pot starts this week at $100.00!
Last Week’s Program: Lisa, Rhonda, and Nuria came to speak to us about Sixpence. This program helps children through age 3 get the support, guidance, and education they need to thrive in preschool through high school. Families come as referrals from past or current participants in the program. Sixpence workers visit families 3 times a month and work with the mother to interact with their child, teach them fun things to promote learning in the home, and give the support they need to gain confidence in their parenting. It is a volunteer program focusing on high-risk families. This can be families who struggle to provide consistent education, teen parents, single parents, or ones where English is their second language. Sixpence has a criteria and curriculum they must follow. The parent and child are required to participate in several tests throughout the program to determine progress and additional opportunities for the child.
The program has been in Crete for 8 years and is currently only in Nebraska even though other states have similar programs. They are funded both privately and publicly. If you'd like to know more, any of the ladies who joined us would be happy to share more! Their office is at 1122 Main St here in town.
