Rotary Foundation
5:30 pm at The Brew House

November Birthdays: Jack Thompson 11/27

November Anniversaries:  Jack and Mary Garrison 11/16/85, Judy Harms 11/26, Craig Snyder 11/29

This week Mary Garrison will bring us a Rotary Foundation speaker.  This would be a great time to make a donation to the Foundation.

The Social Media/Public Relations Committees would like members to send them pictures of our events to post on facebook or sent to The Crete News.  They want members to like/share our facebook page.  They want to work on a Crete Rotary Brochure for recruitment and promoting our club.

The Social Committee is planning the Christmas Party and needs input on other social events.

Grocery Grab is off and running.  If you haven’t picked up tickets yet, see Jim Fahrnbruch.  All tickets and money needs to be turned in by the November 30th drawing!!

At last week’s meeting we welcomed Ian McKeithen, Doane's Men's basketball coach, and Ryan Baumgartner, the Graduate Assistant to Tracee Fairbanks, Doane Women's basketball coach.

Ian was an assistant coach last year and is now the head coach.  There are 5 core values he instills in the men's team: appreciation, community, details, respect, and discipline.  Appreciation is the main value he pushes the team towards--being appreciative of the team, where they are in life, the community surrounding them both at Doane and in Crete.  He would like to get more involved in Crete's school system, speaking to the kids and inviting them more to games.

As a coach, he strives to recognize the differences in the individuals on the team and get to know them on a personal level.  He wants them all to embrace and respect the differences and have that same passion for getting to know each other on a one-on-one level.  Another goal he has for himself and the team is to be functional outside of basketball.  He doesn't want to only be their coach--but rather teach them lessons outside of basketball and instill that trust with his players.

They have a 4-1 record this year, so please cheer on the Men's team at Doane on Monday when they play St. Mary at 7.  They also have an away game in South Dakota next Thursday at 7.

Ryan Baumgartner is a Doane alum graduating in 2014 with a degree in Business and is now pursuing his Masters in Business.  It is his second year with the women's basketball team.  This year they have a fairly young team with five freshman, but have great leadership in the six seniors on the team.  Altogether there are 26 women on the JV and Varsity teams.

Like the men's team, the women have five core values they are held to: discipline, integrity, communication, competitive excellence, and love and respect.  According to Ryan, Tracee is a great example of all five and does a great job of holding the women accountable.

The women's basketball team also had a combined team GPA of 3.65 last year which is the highest of all the athletic groups on campus.  Ryan dedicates that to the 2 hour device-free study hall that he periodically patrols to make sure the women are staying focused.

Welcome new member Ron Benson to the group!  Reach out to him in the upcoming weeks to allow him to get to know our members.  Members also spoke highly of his sermons on Sunday mornings so feel free to attend a church service in support of his move to our community.

Tom Parker's number was drawn yet again in the drawing!  He donated to dictionaries but could not find the Queen.  We will try again next week with the accumulated pot at $187.

The Brew House will be our new permanent meeting place.  The club will continue to meet at different times throughout the month.  On the first and third weeks in the month, we will meet on Wednesday evenings at 5:30.  (If there are five weeks in a month, it will also be on Wednesday evening).  On the second and fourth weeks, we will meet Tuesdays at noon.  Some months will vary from this schedule for special meetings or work projects.  So keep up with your emails!
