August 16th Meeting Program

Mike Morris spoke to us about his new direction after teaching high school choir--SENCAP.  The Southeast Nebraska Career Academy Program (SENCAP) is a program offered by SCC that allows high school students the opportunity to take college courses (earning college credit) while still in high school.  There are 10 different areas offered ranging from business and healthcare, to agriculture.  The program started 8 years ago and has grown to 45 schools around southeast Nebraska and 800 participating students.

Mike is a point of contact between the school districts, SCC, and the students.  He works to "recruit" juniors and seniors to register for classes and mentors them during their classes and assigns one assignment a week per the academy's requirements.  It's a great way for students to figure out what they enjoy or want to do as a career while still in high school.  The student can earn as many credits as they would like to which not only prepares them for college, but it alleviates some of the cost associated with it.  SCC covers half of the tuition and the school district covers the other half (many times with the Perkins grant).  Some schools even purchase the book for the student!

If you or anyone you know could benefit from having Mike speak at the school, or student directly, feel free to reach out to him!  It is good to hear ways Crete and surrounding communities are helping students discover additional options for them after high school.

Boomerang For August 16th
Crete Rotary Club
Regular Meeting @ TBH
Wednesday, August 16th, 5:30

The Crete Rotary Club's first annual "Rotary Night" fundraiser at The Brew House last Wednesday was a rousing success. We raised $1,072 to use toward our Community Garden Arbor Grant Project. 16 members, sporting our new Rotary shirts, were on hand to assist Chef Marty Fye with food prep, customer service and clean up. A special "Thank You" to Marty and also to The Brew House for their contributions. And also a thank you to all of the spouses, children and grand children of members who attended! Hopefully it will become a regular annual event for the club. Maybe next year we could come up with a Crete "talent show" or something similar that would be fun and entertaining to draw a larger crowd.

This week's regular meeting will be on Wednesday at 5:30 at TBH. Our busy month of August will continue and we will hear from Tom Parker and Craig Snyder on how the club can assist with the Crete Youth Cabin Open House on August 20th. We will have a sign up sheet available. This will be a very important event for the future of the Cabin and we'll need another good member turnout. We will also welcome Mike Morris who will speak to the club about his activities on behalf of the Southeast Nebraska Career Academy Program (SENCAP).

A reminder also that Kayleigh Schadwinkel with the Crete Chamber of Commerce is looking for some members to help issue wrist bands at the start of their "Band in the Street" event on Saturday evening August 19th, in downtown Crete. Because of our other club activities going on right now, we are not looking at this as an official club project. But I know Kayleigh would appreciate any help she can get. And it will be a fun time as well!

Jim Fahrnbruch attended the District Conference in Omaha this weekend and on behalf of the club accepted our "Top Ten Club" certificate. Thank you Jim and congratulations Crete Rotary!

Finally, plan on attending our August 30th 5:30 meeting which will be an "Ice Cream Social" hosted by the Fahrnbruchs at their house. Family members are encouraged to attend and more details are coming.
