Dulce Castañeda, Crete Community Assistance Director, came to speak with us about this brand new position.  She assists the new residents, mainly minority immigrants, of Crete to become educated, established, and involved in the community.  As the point-of-contact for these new residents, she assists in three main ways:

 

1.  Finding low-cost resources for low-to-moderate income families coming into Crete. This is mainly seen in connecting them to various health, education, and housing opportunities Crete has to offer.  

 

2. Helping apply for systems within the community.  

 

3.  General assistance such as registering to vote, filling out health forms and job applications, etc.  This is certainly not an exhaustive list, so if you're interested in hearing more about what she does or introducing yourself, her office is located in Crete's City Hall. 

 

There are three upcoming events sponsored by the City of Crete and related to her position.  They are:

 

1.  World Dish Potluck and Immigration 101 is at the Crete High School commons area from 6-8 PM on September 21.  This will take the place of that week's Rotary meeting, and all are invited to attend and bring a dish to share.

 

2.  Documentary screening of "When We Stop Counting" Sept. 15 at Doane's Heckman Auditorium beginning at 7 PM.  A group of high school students created this documentary sharing their stories.  Come by to view the documentary and see where they are now.  A Q&A will follow.

 

3. Crete Community Center--The opportunity to vote on a community center in Crete will come on November's election ballot.  This community center will likely be housed in the old Tabitha building (although not official) and will provide library services as well as a storm shelter in severe weather.

 

 

 

Karen Drevo and Tyler Cyboron were inducted as new members on Wednesday.  Feel free to introduce yourself in the upcoming weeks to give them a warm welcome to Crete's Rotary Club.

 

Dulce drew Tom Parker's ticket, but he did not find the queen of spades.  The pot will begin with $134, and the deck of cards is down to 33.  He donated the 6 dollars to the dictionary fund.

 

The dictionaries are in!  Chris Duntz is looking for volunteers to deliver them September 14 @ 11:20am.  Let Jim F. know if you can help.

 

Grocery Grab--Tentatively set for December 17th.  Tickets will become available for sale in the third week of September.

 

The Pumpkin Festival will be held on October 2nd from 11am-4pm.  Rotary will be helping out at the information booth as well as our own booth in the city park.  If you can help, sign up for a 2 hour slot: 10:30-12:30, 12:30-2:30, 2:30-4.  Rotary will be selling tickets for the grocery grab at our booth.  We would also like to raffle off our picnic table as well.  Judy Harms suggested a silent auction which seemed to be well-received.  Come with other ideas next week if you have them.

 

Youth Cabin Grant Project:  We have set Saturday, September 10, to begin work on our project.  Mark this date on your calendar; we need as many hands as we can get to help with this project.  Wear long pants, long sleeved shirts and gloves.  Bring yard work equipment.  Food will be provided.
