Checking: $1,271.93
Scholarship: $1,273.42
Drawing
John L won the drawing and designated both his share and the contribution portion for PolioPlus. He did not win the accumulated pot.
Picnic Table Project
We now have poured concrete pads for six tables – four at Rotary Park and two at the dog park. Two tables are complete and assembly will continue on the next four. Tom Parker will cut the remainder of the pieces for the next six tables and we will stain them at a future meeting.
Grocery Grab
The Fundraising Committee presented initial plans for the 5th Annual Grocery Grab then met following the regular meeting to finalize them. Here are details:
· Schedule: Start ticket sales early October. Drawing will be at our meeting on December 2. Grocery Grab will be Saturday, December 12.
· Where: Food Mart
· Tickets: As in the past, tickets will be $10 each or 3 for $25. At the meeting, we agreed that, since this is our main fundraising event for the year, each member will be responsible for two books of tickets (20 tickets). Members may sell or buy the tickets but are not eligible to win.
· Selling: Peter Clarke at Food Mart will allow us to sell tickets in front of the store. He said that Friday afternoons and Saturdays are the busiest times. NOTE: If you think you will have trouble selling two books of tickets on your own, plan to sell tickets at Food Mart.
· Sponsorships: We are offering sponsorships for $250. Sponsors will receive 10 tickets plus recognition on our advertising and in newspaper articles.
Dictionaries
Chris Duntz is organizing delivery of dictionaries to 3rd grade students. A signup sheet will be sent to all members.
Program
Kerri Thornburg of Public Health Solutions gave a presentation on new CPR procedures and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs). Public Health Solutions has received a grant to help them distribute AEDs throughout their five-county region and to provide basic training to people.
The new technique for CPR consists only of chest compressions at the rate of 100/minute. (A simple way to remember the tempo is do it in time with the old hit song “Stayin’ Alive.” For young Rotarians, look it up on YouTube.)
AEDs are now located in many public places. When activated, they will provide instructions to the rescuer. Once the sensor pads are in place and connected, the AED will check for a pulse on the victim. Assuming that none is detected, the AED will provide a shock. If the victim’s heart does not start beating, the rescuer should resume CPR. At two minute intervals, the AED will repeat the check and shock process.
If anyone knows groups of people who would benefit from a brief training session, please contact Kerri Thornburg at 402-239-2259 or kthornburg@phsneb.org
