At our meeting this week, we had the pleasure of hearing from Baagii Boldmaa.  He is a 3 time national champion wrestler at Doane University and had 100 consecutive wins (1 of only 6 in the country).  This season the senior lost in the semi-finals by one point. He is from Mongolia and came here in 2014 moving to Washington DC.  He has no family in the states, but has a friend in fellow Doane wrestler, Hunter Bennett, who he states is like a brother to him. Hunter's family has really treated him like family.
His freshman year he attended Northwest Kansas Tech, but the head coach at Doane called and recruited him to go to Doane.  His goals were to become a national champion and attend a university--both of which were accomplished at Doane!  He is a fitness management major with a strength and conditioning minor, he has plans to move back to Washington DC when he graduates in May.
It was clear he values his health at all times--not partying, drinking, or smoking.  But what he considers the most important thing is his faith.  He gives credit to God when he is successful for the strength to compete, but when he loses, he's still thankful to God for his teammates and coaches.  When he wins, he does not celebrate overtly out of respect for his opponent, but he is known to do a couple backflips among his peers when he feels happy. We appreciate Baagii and Hunter coming to share with us.  We look forward to hearing what Baagii does in the future.
Other meeting highlights: Signup sheets were passed around for members to volunteer for two of our upcoming service projects- Hwy cleanup this Wednesday and Youth Cabin cleanup/social the following Wednesday. We had good numbers for both sheets which confirms the club's motto "Service Above Self"! The signup sheets were also mailed to the entire club so those that could not attend the meeting have a chance to still signup. the more the merrier!
Shay Smith offered a suggestion for a grant project for the coming year. Her idea was inspired by an educational book auction held at the Rotary District Conference for Ukranian children. Her idea is to use the grant funds to purchase books and other educational items for Crete's Sixpence program. You can learn more about the Sixpence program at the Crete Public Schools website. It is the first grant idea brought forward and all members are encouraged to suggest other ideas for the club to consider in the next few weeks. In May we will need to make a decision on a grant project.
Have a great week and hopefully see you at the Hwy Cleanup on Wednesday!
