Justice for Our Neighbors, Nebraska
Meeting – May 25, 2016

Attendance:
12 out of 25 members attended.

Schedule:
See the Upcoming Events section on the left side of the Crete Rotary home page.  You may click on a specific event to get more details.
  • June 1 – End-of-Year picnic at Tom and Vicki Sorensen’s (715 Co. Rd. 2100)
  • June 9 (Thursday) – Help at Crete Area Medical Center picnic to be held indoors at Doane’s Fuhrer Field House.
  • June 15 – Regular meeting at Doane.  Kayleigh Schadwinkle, the new head of the Crete Chamber of Commerce, will speak to the group.

Jim Fahrnbruch encouraged members to register for the District 5650 annual conference to be held August 5 & 6 at the Innovation Campus in Lincoln.  There is an early registration discount.  This is a great opportunity to see what Rotary is doing.

Scholarship Winners:
Our four Rotary scholarship winners were introduced.  They are Tara Tran (will attend UNL), Brandon Hall (Kansas State), Favian Mendez (UNL), and Bailey Bruha (Wayne State).  Bailey was accompanied by her mother Diane who is Director of Special Programs for the Crete Public Schools.

RYLA Students:
The two RYLA students were introduced.  Ana Perez-Mendez and Colin Maly described their experiences at the three-day event in April.

Grant Project:
Tom Parker and John Lothrop reported on a possible grant project.  After touring the Youth/Scout Cabin and discussions with Laura Ebke, they recommended that we apply for a grant to renovate the stone fireplace in the cabin and replace the sidewalk in front of the cabin.  The club approved the concept.  John will submit the application.

Program:
The program was presented by Mindy Rush-Chipman, an attorney with Justice for Our Neighbors, Nebraska.  This is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that provides immigration legal services, education, and advocacy at no cost for people who cannot afford such services.

Mindy provided a hand-out that highlights different types of US citizenships, categories of non-citizens, and various forms of immigration relief.

The Crete Rotary Club meets Wednesdays at 5:30 PM at Doane College in the Board Room of the Perry Campus Center.  Due to numerous service projects, we may not meet some weeks.  Please check the event calendar.
