November 18 – Regular meeting at Doane.  We will have a program on polio, including several polio survivors.

 

November 25 – No meeting.  Happy Thanksgiving.

 

December 2 – Doane basketball double-header vs. Hastings.  Women play at 6pm and men at 8pm.  We will meet at 5:30pm in the athletic conference room in the Haddix Center (2^nd floor, north end).  We will draw the winner of the Grocery Grab raffle.

 

December 9 – To be determined.

 

December 16 – Christmas party.  See details below.

 

December 23 – No meeting.  Merry Christmas.

Chris Duntz won the drawing and designated her portion for the Rotary Foundation and the contribution portion for PolioPlus.  To feigned groans of dismay of everyone, she did not win the accumulated pot.

 

We are DONE!  Tom, Craig, and Geoff finished the last three tables and placed them at the Youth Cabin.  We will wait for the final tally but it looks like we went just a few dollars over budget.

 

There are only three weeks until the drawing!!  We need to be selling them at every opportunity.

 

Several people have not yet picked up any tickets to sell.  Remember that we are asking each member to either sell or purchase at least two books (10 tickets).  This is our primary fundraising event.  Without this, we will not be able to give scholarships to students and would not have been able to do the picnic table project.  Please pick up your tickets to sell from Chris Duntz at the Edward Jones office on Highway 33. 

 

 

After some discussion, we made the following decisions regarding our annual Christmas holiday party:

·        It will be the evening of Wednesday, December 16.

·        It will be held in the Campus Center at Doane.

·        We will contact Gina’s Catering Service (same as last year).

·        We will forgo caroling at the hospital that night since the hospital census is typically very low at that time of year.

·        We will invite former Rotarians, surviving spouses, families, and other guests.  Each Rotarian will be responsible for paying for meals for her/his guests.

·        It is permissible for individual Rotarians to bring and consume wine and/or beer.  Whether or not we will do this is still open to debate.

 

Mary Garrison presented information on The Rotary Foundation (TRF).  The mission of TRF is to enable Rotarians to advance, World Understanding, Goodwill and Peace through the Improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty. 

 

The six areas of focus are:

1.      Peace and conflict prevention & resolution

2.      Disease prevention & treatment

3.      Water & sanitation

4.      Maternal & child health

5.      Basic education & literacy

6.      Economic & community development

 

The Annual Fund is the primary source of funding for the programs of TRF.  For us to continue doing so much good in the world, it is necessary for Every Rotarian to participate in the programs and to support our Foundation Every Year.  The goal for the Crete Rotary Club is that every Rotarian gives something every year for the Annual Fund and that we average $100 per member.

 

TRF has very low overhead (8%) with 92% of donated dollars going to programs.  It was awarded four out of four stars by Charity Navigator with a rating score of 96 out of 100.  This is an excellent rating and significantly higher than other well-known organizations.  For example, the Muscular Dystrophy Association has 25% overhead, a rating score of 72 and was awarded only two stars.  The American Heart Association has 22% overhead, a rating score of 88 and was awarded three stars.

 

TRF policy is that three years after money has been given, 50% of it will go to global projects via the World Fund.  The remaining 50% is distributed back to districts through District Designated Funds (DDF) for educational and humanitarian activities.  It was these DDFs that were the source of our matching $2,000 grant for the picnic table project.

Please help us reach our TRF goal of every Rotarian, every year, $100.

 

Paul Harris Fellow recognition is bestowed on all Rotarians who give a lifetime total of $1,000 or more to The Rotary Foundation and/or PolioPlus.  Further recognition is given for each additional $1,000 cumulative contribution in the form of “Paul Harris +1,” “Paul Harris +2” etc.  The Crete Rotary Club has a total of thirteen Paul Harris Fellows, with six at the first level, four at the +1 level, two at the +2 level, and one at the +3 level.  Congratulations and thanks to all Paul Harris Fellows.  John Lothrop recently received the “Paul Harris +3” recognition from Jim Fahrnbruch.
