Last Week- Thirteen members attended our Wednesday evening meeting at TBH. Judy Harms won the drawing and donated $6 each to our Polio and Foundation funds. Thanks Judy! Our fledgling accumulated pot grew by $6 and an unnamed person put $20 "seed" money in the pot- so for our next drawing we are already up to $26. Club topics discussed continue to be; does the club want to field a "Rotary Team" for this year's Relay For Life Event in April; a project to repair the exterior of the concession stand at Rotary Park; does the club want to take on a tree planting project this spring; and does the club want to agree to help prepare and serve a meal for those less fortunate at the UCC Church this spring. I believe it is a testament to our club's good work and reputation that we are asked to take part in projects such as these. I would like to get feedback from members either in person or by email as to your thoughts on taking these on. Joy Stevenson spoke to us about the progress on the new Library, Community Room, and City-Wide Storm Shelter. She has been the library director since April of last year. Her goal for the new facility is for it to be a destination place for citizens of Crete. The library will be on 15th and Grove where the old hospital/Tabitha was for a number of years. In the last month, it has been demolished, and construction plans are set to be finalized in the middle of this year with construction beginning shortly thereafter. They plan to have the project completed by fall 2019. Some of the new features are a drive-through to drop off books and pick up the one's residents have called ahead to reserve. Among other areas, there are plans to include a children's garden, study rooms, teen area, MakerSpace, playground, fireplace, outdoor benches, and seating areas. Of course, none of this would be possible without generous grants and donations. The majority of the project has been paid for, but there is approximately 1.5 million left to raise. They would love to see donations from the community to make this possible. Donations are tax-deductible, and can offer tax credits in some circumstances. Visit www.crete.ne.gov/library to learn about the progress of the library. As far as the future of the old building, that's uncertain. The original Carnegie building from 1914 has "good bones" according to Joy, but the 1985 extension is splitting from the original building. She would love to see the original building preserved because of the history, but it's up to the City to decide. To house offices would take extensive renovation according to Joy.
