Our presenter, Tina Rockenbach spoke to us about a new after school program offered at the high school called Cardinal Union.  The program provides a safe place for students to go after school (3:30-8:30pm Monday-Friday).  It is a brand new program not only in Crete, but also in the state!  It's one of three programs in Nebraska, two that are fully funded by the CCLC grant program, and the only one that is successful.  What makes a successful program is that students actually come to the school consistently during those times and participate actively.  Last semester 400 students participated in the program in some way!

The program has 4 components: 1) social atmosphere--fun things to do, a place to socialize in between practice, meetings, or any reason.  2) Workshops--Tina provides workshops the kids suggest to get them more involved and to learn different skills.  Music, cooking, yoga, etc are just a few the kids have wanted to learn more about.  3) Academic--there is a fully-staffed tutoring center available.  The Alpha Pi Epsilon fraternity at Doane tutors high school students for their community service hours.  4) meals--a snack and supper is provided every night for students 18 and under. 

Tina told us about a music group called Prince Ivan that is coming to Crete for a concert on January 31st from 7-9pm.  It's open to the public through a free-will donation, but they will be hosting workshops for the students during the day, participating in choir practice, and even teaching the students one of their songs they will perform with the group during the concert!  The students are very excited and it was nice to hear about a popular after school program.  Tina can be reached at tina.rockenbach@creteschools.org or (402) 826-9856 if you would like to be involved or would like more information.
