The Crete Rotary Club received awards for giving to The Rotary Foundation and for a community service project at the District 5650 Conference on August 21, 2015.
The Crete Rotary Club received two awards at the recent Rotary District 5650 conference. The district includes 45 Rotary Clubs in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa.
The Crete Club was first in the District for per-capita giving to The Rotary Foundation. The Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Rotary International. Its mission is to enable Rotary members to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, support of education, and alleviation of poverty. One example is Rotary’s global effort to eradicate polio.

The Club also received an award for Best Community Service Project for its recycling efforts at the Saline County Fair. Members place containers at the fair then recycle both aluminum cans and plastic bottles. Since 2003, the Crete Rotarians have recycled almost 2,400 pounds of aluminum and 116 trash bags of plastic bottles.

September 2 – Regular meeting. John will report on the recent District Conference and we will discuss plans for the Grocery Grab. Originally we were planning to work on picnic tables, however, logistics would be a problem with too many people.
September 9 – Regular meeting. Program: National Science Foundation grant for Doane. Ramesh Laungani will talk about a $607,539 National Science Foundation grant awarded to Doane in support of its SUCCESS (Sustaining Undergraduate Classroom and Career Excellence for STEM Students) Program for which he is the Principal Investigator. Dr. Laungani is an Assistant Professor of Biology at Doane.
September 16 – (Tentative) Work project at the Maples Museum.
September 23 – (Tentative) Program to be determined. Could be switched with September 16.
September 30 – (Tentative) Club Assembly.

Work project
In lieu of a program, we all gathered at Craig Snyder’s garage to stain parts for the first six picnic tables. We had a great turnout and stained all of the parts that were ready (approximately 500 parts).
The next steps will be to assemble the tables, finish the edges, sand to top surfaces, and finish staining them. We will need a small team of individuals for the assembly work. We will also need a small team to pour concrete for the pads at Rotary Park and at the city dog park.
Following the staining party, we enjoyed a wonderful potluck dinner. Thanks to the Social Committee for planning a great event.
The Crete Rotary Club meets Wednesdays at 5:30 PM at Doane College in the Board Room of the Perry Campus Center. Due to numerous service projects, we may not meet some weeks. Please check the event calendar.
