Breaking News! The 2023 recipient of Crete Rotary Club's Golden Wheel Award is Janet Jeffries! Both of our candidates were exceptional, and the vote was as close as it could be. The Golden Wheel Award is a District 5650 program that recognizes a community member who exemplifies "Rotary like" selflessness and volunteerism above and beyond. The following is a portion of the nomination form that briefly describes some of what Janet does for Crete and the surrounding area. "Janet has long been the unofficial historian for Crete and Doane University. Her working background is in historical preservation. In Crete, she is the go-to person for historical information and artifacts, helping to curate the local historical society’s property and museum, known as the Crete Heritage Society and The Maples House. She coordinates group and school tours as well as making sure the property is ready for local fourth graders and their annual Pioneer Day activities. She gives presentations year-round on local history topics to many groups and organizations. For many years she has served as a sponsor of local middle school and high school students in research projects for the annual Nebraska History Day competition. She helps them focus their ideas and find supporting materials to create their presentations and performances, while also promoting an interest in the family history and Crete and Nebraska history along the way. She promotes cultural history of the area’s settlers, including offering her vast knowledge of Czech history. During nearby Wilber’s annual Czech Festival, she spends an entire week setting up her collection of Czech costumes, textiles, genealogy materials, and button accordions for display to the public." Janet will be invited to visit the club at one of our meetings coming up and will also be invited to be recognized at our district's annual conference in mid-October in Omaha. Congratulations Janet! This continues to be a very busy time of year for the club and therefore we have a lot of topics to discuss at this week's meeting. They include the upcoming District Conference, our Grocery Grab fundraiser, an update on our dictionary purchase program and our Sixpence grant project. Our speaker for the meeting is Kylie Nicewonger. She is responsible for enforcing certain building codes, especially those pertaining to properties in bad condition.
