Barb Herzog brought along a former student of a 300 level human rights course, Emily Folkerts. Emily took a 100 level class covering human rights when she was a freshman, and continued with Barb's class as a junior. Emily and her classmates listened to some speakers and presenters throughout the class to give them ideas on a project they were assigned to create. Those speakers talked to them about the needs of the community, but it was up to them to come up with how to meet those needs as a class. Some ideas were a toy drive, or an activity in making the toys for children. Ultimately they decided on an information day where members of the community could come and get information on voting/voter registration, healthcare, blood drives, etc. The class members each took an area they were passionate about, compiled information, and used it to educate those who came. While their attempt was not wildly successful, the ones who did come found value in the information. Another rewarding endeavor for the class was having conversations with individuals learning English through a class at the UCC church. Barb’s class is offered in the fall and each group comes up with new ideas to meet the needs of the community. We look forward to seeing Doane students being more active in the community!
