Crete Rotary Recognizes Local Students

The Crete Rotary Club recognized eight Crete High School students at its meeting on May 13.

Four juniors were selected to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) Seminar April 17-19 at Camp Kitaki near Louisville, NE.  RYLA is a leadership development program for high school juniors covering a variety of topics including: leadership fundamentals and ethics; communication skills; problem-solving and conflict management; and community and global citizenship.  The Crete students attending RYLA were Emerson Andelt, Zack Keck, Allison Singh, and Tara Tran.  The students described their experiences at RYLA and all of them enthusiastically endorsed the seminar.

Four Crete High School seniors were selected to receive college scholarships from the Crete Rotary Club.  The students are Anna Flores, Dillon Nerud, Amelia Roth, and Renae Sieck.  Funds for the scholarships were raised by Rotary at their annual Grocery Grab raffle last December.  Anna Flores attended the meeting.

Schedule:
See the Upcoming Events section on the left side of the Crete Rotary home page.  You may click on a specific event to get more details.

On May 20, we will do some outdoor work at the Crete Area Medical Center starting at 5:00pm.  Bring gloves, rakes, and tools you think might be appropriate.

On May 27, we will help set up a pumpkin patch for Crete’s planned Great Pumpkin festival in October.

On June 3, we will have a presentation on the new website plus instruction for logging into your account.  We plan to hold the meeting in one of Doane’s classrooms so that we will have access to computers.  Details to be announced.

Treasurer’s Report:
Jim Fahrnbruch reported that he has made a payment of $3,000 to the Crete Public Schools Trust for our scholarships.  The Trust will dispense money to each student on our behalf.  He also noted that a grant from the District covered half of the expenses for each RYLA student.

Matching Grant Submission:
Following the meeting, Bret Schroder, Jim Fahrnbruch, Tom Parker, and John Lothrop worked on the grant application to build picnic tables for Rotary Park and the Youth Cabin.  Jim submitted the application.

We were introduced to the RYLA students and one of the scholarship recipients.  See the accompanying article.
The Crete Rotary Club meets Wednesdays at 5:30 PM at Doane College in the Board Room of the Perry Campus Center.  Due to numerous service projects, we may not meet some weeks.  Please check the event calendar.
