"Service Above Self"
Happy Father's Day!
We had a great turnout for our regular meeting this past Wednesday. We discussed several club topics including the status of our district grant project application. We had been notified by the district last week that our application was not accepted. Our application project idea was to purchase and install three or four mural designs on the exterior of a few Crete buildings. The murals would promote the many qualities of living in Crete as well as promote local business while supporting the inclusion of the entire community. They would be "selfie" friendly and would include the Rotary logo. At the meeting we discussed the idea of the club pursuing the mural project on our own without participating in the district grant process. The club voted to dedicate a $1,000 of club funds to the project contingent on our being able to raise another $2,000.
Two upcoming service projects were also discussed. This weekend many club members volunteered to help prepare and then paint the concrete floor in the auditorium part of the Isis Theater. Members gathered at the theater Friday evening, Saturday morning and Sunday evening. The work was well organized by Shay Smith and the interior of the remodeled theater looks amazing. The grand opening is just around the corner! Thank you to everyone that helped!
The Saline County Fair is approaching quickly, and members were asked to "save the dates" so that we can so we can have good number of volunteers for the work projects. Signup sheets will be distributed soon for the fair.
Jill Wild, a former Crete native, who lives in Playa del Carmen, Mexico with her husband John, visited with the club about their experience being in an English-speaking Rotary Club (Rotary Club of Playa del Carmen Seaside). Their club is participating in fundraising efforts to provide meals and education opportunities to much of the desperately poor local population. You can visit their club's website at  and their Facebook page at .

Our program for the meeting was Kevin Zadina, owner of the Crete News and several other newspapers including the Seward County Independent, The Wilber Republican, The Milford Times and The Friend Sentinel.  He shared some history and facts of the newspapers in Saline County:
  • The Crete News started in 1908 and has had 18 names since then
  • DeWitt has the second most names at 14, but it closed in 2011
  • The oldest newspaper in Saline County is the Wilber Republican started in 1887
  • There have been 84 papers in the county dating back to 1871.  The first being The Saline County Post in Crete from 1871-1877
The newspapers are owned by a marketing company owned by Kevin called Sweet Tea Media LLC.  It’s the third largest owner of newspapers in Nebraska!
You can visit the Crete News website at  You can subscribe to either the print or online version at the site for the low price of $38/year (or view monthly, weekly, or daily subscription prices), browse some news stories on the page, and even sign up for “The Daily Slice”!  It emails highlights from the previous day or upcoming events for free!
Thank you, Kevin, for the interesting and informative program!
