Boomerang for May 27th, 2026
Last week we welcomed our scholarship recipients and Alyssa Capek who is the first Crete student to go to State speech since 2019!
Scholarship Recipients from Left to Right:
Grace Clevette--Doane University double majoring in Math and Psychology, double minoring in Drug Abuse Counseling and Leadership
Kacey Dunaway--Iowa Western majoring in Biology, then transferring to a 4-year institution to complete her education
Lauren Kraus--Creighton University majoring in Interdisciplinary Sciences
Stacy Mora-- UNO for Pre-Nursing, then UNMC

Alyssa Capek went to state in speech for her Entertainment speech on the Cultural Themes of My Little Pony.  She did not perform the speech but shared a little about the speech team now, speech meets/tournaments, and her plan to grow the speech team.  Right now there are very few members (5-6, which is down from 20-30 from 2018-2019).  Before 8th grade move up day, she created a website explaining speech, the different events, etc.  On move up day, she hung posters up around the high school with a QR code students could scan and learn about speech.  The site also allowed them to put in their information if they wanted to join.  She got 35 signups from 8th grade and high school students!

Throughout her time speaking, we learned that the dynamics within speech and speech tournaments aren't perfect and are quite subjective, but she did want to point out that the main lessons she learned during her time with speech so far is gaining confidence, cultivating creativity, and the opportunity for scholarships.  Members also shared the benefits of speech in their own lives or their children's lives.  Thank you, Alyssa, for sharing the impact speech has made on you.

We currently do not have a meeting for June 10th--if anyone has a program idea, please let either Shay or Janelle know.  June 24th will be a passing of the gavel.  Details to come on where it will be held.

July is our fair events, please mark your calendars for July 16th-19th as we will continue helping during the events Thursday night, and recycling Friday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings.  Sign up sheets will be going around.
