Andrea Holmes gave the program on “Animal Rights”. She is a professor of chemistry at Doane, but wanted to give a program that she is passionate about outside of chemistry. She brought two co-workers and one student who help in her chemistry labs.
Andrea showed sides to emphasize the horrible, overcrowded and unsanitary conditions in “Puppy Mills”. Many animals have been debarked and neglected. They experience “kennel crazy” and are malnourished.
There are many of these puppy mills in Nebraska, especially in rural areas. There are few laws to protect the animals from this abuse. Andrea urged members to convince state legislators to address this issue. If you are interested in adopting an animal, Hearts Unlimited is a great organization to investigate. They will make sure that animals adopted are in good health and up to date on shots. You can also contribute money to their cause.
Drawing: Andrea drew the winning ticket and it was one of her co-workers, Kristina. Kristina won $6.00 but failed to find the Queen of Spades. The Pot will start this week at$67.00.
We sold our second picnic table and delivered it to Jim Johnson’s backyard. We have one more assembled, see Tom Parker for details.
This week we will have a Club Assembly. We will start at 5:30pm at Doane. Discussion will be held on Goals for 2016-17, member surveys and meeting times. We will work on committee assignments, decide what we do at the County Fair (sign-up sheets will be available), and the District Governor’s visit (July 27th). I will bring pizza and water (enough for 20) to encourage attendance!!
