Ryan Sotham, the Outreach Coordinator from the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office spoke to us about identity theft and prevention on Tuesday.  He shared some eye-opening statistics about how large of a problem identity theft is (even in Crete), common scams to watch for, and prevention.  Scams to watch for are the tech support scam, grandparent’s scam, and the suspended or disabled account scam.  Spearfishing is growing in popularity where personal information is requested through an email sent by the fraudster.  The common theme to make all of these scams successful is the “human element”—somewhere along the line, a mistake was made by a human.  Education and preparation are good ways to protect yourself. 

 Ryan recommended we put a security freeze on our credit with all three credit bureaus and getting a copy of your credit report often through annualcreditreport.com.  You can also go to protectthegoodlife.nebraska.gov to keep up to date on the latest scams reported in Nebraska. (Program recap provided by President-Elect Janelle Snodgrass)

 

 

This Week- We will meet for a regular meeting on Wednesday evening at TBH at 5:30. Our program is presented by Matt Gregory. He is a Clean Energy Advocate for the Nebraska Wildlife Federation which is promoting the "Husker Power Plan". This "plan" is an attempt to improve conservation practices in the state. He will be joined by Dr. Russ Souchek, Professor of Environmental Sciences at Doane University.
